A leading global private markets investment platform is seeking a senior Japan-based capital formation professional to lead institutional investor coverage and strategic relationship development across the market. The individual will be responsible for deepening relationships with major Japanese institutional investors, supporting fundraising across a broad alternatives platform, and representing the firm with senior decision-makers across the region.
The role will focus primarily on institutional investors, including pension funds, insurers, financial institutions, sovereign-linked entities, and asset managers. Exposure to intermediary, private wealth, or wholesale channels would be advantageous but is not essential.
The candidate will be expected to:
- Lead and expand senior investor coverage across Japan.
- Develop long-term relationships with key institutional investors and decision-makers.
- Represent a broad private markets platform with credibility across multiple strategies.
- Act as a technical, content-led relationship professional, able to engage with CIOs and senior investment teams.
- Work closely with global investment, product, and distribution colleagues to align investor engagement and fundraising priorities.
- Build, manage, and develop a small local team over time.
- Contribute to broader regional fundraising strategy by providing insight into Japanese investor appetite, market dynamics, and competitive positioning.
- Maintain a discreet, collaborative, and highly professional approach in all client and internal interactions.
Key responsibilities:
- Develop and execute a Japan investor coverage strategy with clear priorities across fundraising, relationship development, and client penetration.
- Build sustainable, multi-year relationships with existing and prospective investors.
- Identify and pursue new fundraising opportunities across the Japanese institutional landscape.
- Lead senior-level engagement with CIOs, heads of alternatives, portfolio construction teams, and other key stakeholders.
- Partner with global colleagues across investment strategies, product development, structuring, and client coverage.
- Monitor investor sentiment, allocation trends, and competitor activity across the Japanese alternatives market.
- Support the hiring and development of a high-performing local coverage team.
- Ensure all market activity reflects the firm’s standards of integrity, discretion, and collaboration.
Candidate profile:
- At least 12 years’ experience in institutional sales, investor relations, capital formation, or distribution within private markets, alternatives, or investment management.
- Strong fundraising track record in Japan.
- Deep understanding of private markets and alternatives, including the ability to discuss portfolio construction, risk-return considerations, and strategy positioning with sophisticated investors.
- Established senior network across Japanese pensions, insurers, banks, asset managers, and other large institutions.
- Experience working within a global investment platform is preferred.
- Fluent Japanese and English required.
- Collaborative, mature, discreet, and low-ego style, with the ability to build credibility internally and externally.
