The Opportunity

This role is a critical business role reporting to the Chief Technology Officer (CTO).  However, we anticipate that the role will also work closely with the Chief Financial Officer who will lead on specific projects.

The Head of Business Applications manages, maintains, and develops the Business Applications of the Group, supporting the nationwide branch office network and field-based operatives and 24/7 alarm receiving centre. The portfolio includes many business-critical applications including, but not limited to Sales and Operations (Salesforce SalesCloud, Field Service, Service Cloud, CPQ & Billing), Finance (Workday), Alarm Handling (Sentinel and Immix) and HR systems (IRIS).

The Head of Business Applications will work with functional senior managers, providing the system owners consultation and support on the status and performance of their departments business applications. The Head of Business Applications will also help support and execute the portfolio strategy, assessing the suitability of current systems, reducing risk and cost, and enhancing functionality through the best use technology, advising the business effectively. The Head of Business Applications will need to develop and lead a skilled team and support them as their line manager in their day-to-day operational work and throughout their career development. The Head of Business Applications must ensure that the resources available to them are effectively managed and planned to include designing efficient support models and providing technical hands-on leadership to projects and change (such as accurate planning information, estimates and task dependencies, assisting in the recruitment of appropriate contractors and directing the work of developers).

The Role

The role manages a team of 6 permanent IT professionals, various outsource partners and interim project staff as and when required.

Managing the Business Applications team to deliver a high-quality service. Duties will include:

  • Define and execute the portfolio strategy, including the vision for how services will drive positive employee and customer experiences, foster greater collaboration, ensuring business applications meet the needs of individuals, projects, and the overall business
  • Maintain Systems Register and Service Catalogue, identifying costs, risk, lifecycle, availability, and performance.
  • Develop and utilise the portfolio to meet business requirements and bring the highest degree of benefit to the end users. Provide leadership and line management to the staff assigned to the team, leading with passion, enthusiasm, and integrity.
  • Be the main point of contact and advice for best practice in your area of expertise. Provide technical architectural expertise, direction, and advice to your team and others and ensure these are aligned to organisational goals, objectives, and standards.
  • Actively manage relationships with vendors ensuring awareness of Technology Road Maps. Act as a liaison point between the business and key vendors, maintaining key relationships to the advantage of the business.
  • Working within IT policies and architecture: analyse, design, build, test, and release applications on time and to specification to deliver the required benefits.
  • Plan, prioritise and perform upgrades, fix requests, or minor enhancements, including development & testing
  • Create and maintain up to date Production Systems Architecture diagrams for each application within the Portfolio alongside standard IT Technical documentation deliverables throughout the system life cycle.
  • Work as a Project Manager where appropriate
  • Provide full-service delivery responsibility undertaking structured planning to ensure sufficient system capacity is made available; that renewal plans to replace obsolete or at-risk technology are timely; and that SLAs with the business are being met or exceeded.
  • Planning, developing, and implementing the IT budget, obtaining competitive prices from suppliers, where appropriate, to ensure cost effectiveness
  • Provide second- and third-line support for those services within the teams remit and act as an escalation for technical difficulties, complex or urgent queries, issues, and incidents.
  • Plan and provide resources and expertise to support the delivery of larger application projects and programmes, managing contracted resources where applicable.
  • Manage, coach, and conduct performance appraisals for direct reports to facilitate their development and effective performance as members of a motivated and empowered team
  • Support the implementation and effective operation of ITIL processes including change, request, service, incident, capacity, and problem management.
  • Manage security, user rights and comply with information-related legislation Keep up to date with industry developments, driving innovation
  • Definition of DR strategy and procedures
  • Manage crisis situations, which may involve complex technical hardware or software problems
  • Establishes company standards, written policies and procedures for information technology acquisition and utilisation
  • Assesses risks systematically and justifies any risk decision
  • Support and service delivery responsibilities and knowledge – IT Helpdesk, ITIL (Design, Transition, Operation)
  • Information Security Management responsibilities and knowledge - ISO27001:2013, Cyber Essentials & Penetration Testing
  • Communicate appropriately with all parties as & when required
  • Responsible for the successful integration of any business acquisitions
  • Observe all company procedures, including Health and Safety and ISO9001.
