AI Leadership for Private Equity

Hiring AI Leaders

Most private equity firms and the businesses they invest in are no longer asking whether AI matters. The real question is who can turn it into measurable outcomes quickly enough to matter within an investment cycle.

The gap between firms that experiment with AI and those that operationalize it is widening and in private equity, that gap shows up directly in performance, valuation and exit outcomes.

Finatal partners with private equity funds and their portfolio companies to hire AI leaders, operators and specialists who translate AI ambition into practical value – from fund-level strategy through to execution inside portfolio businesses.

This is not about experimentation for its own sake. The focus is outcomes: revenue, efficiency, and enterprise value, not pilots that stall at proof-of-concept.

Where applied AI creates value

AI shows up differently at fund level vs portfolio level, but both ultimately ladder into the same objective: accelerating value creation.

At fund level:

  • Investment insight and diligence
Using AI to assess opportunities, triangulate data and strengthen investment decisions faster.
  • Value creation strategy
Defining how AI will be used across the portfolio, identifying the highest-impact opportunities early in the hold.
  • Portfolio-wide capability
Building shared capability, tooling and expertise that can be deployed across multiple assets.

At portfolio company level:

  • Productivity and automation
Reducing manual workload across functions like finance, operations and customer support, and improving margin and scalability.
  • Commercial and customer impact
Using AI to improve pricing, conversion, product functionality and customer experience.
  • Decision-making and insight
Improving visibility and forecasting by embedding AI into workflows and reporting.
  • Operating model transformation
Designing how AI capability sits within the business, including ownership, governance, tooling, and adoption.

What good looks like in an AI hire

The biggest challenge in AI hiring is not sourcing technical talent, it’s identifying individuals who can apply AI in a commercial, time-constrained environment.

The most effective hires combine technical understanding with a strong sense of where AI can realistically create value. They’re able to move from concept to implementation quickly, ensuring initiatives are adopted and embedded within the business rather than remaining theoretical.

Typically, they bring a commercial orientation, linking AI initiatives directly to revenue, margin or efficiency outcomes. They have an execution bias, focusing on delivery and adoption rather than strategy in isolation. Many will have experience building teams or capabilities from scratch, giving them the range to operate across both leadership and delivery.

They’re also credible with senior stakeholders, with an ability to engage CEOs, investors, and functional leaders in a way that aligns AI activity with wider business priorities. Crucially, they’re pragmatic, prioritizing use cases that deliver value in the short to medium term, rather than pursuing complexity for its own sake.

In a private equity context, that combination is what turns AI from an idea into a performance lever.

How we support AI capability build

AI capability in private equity is rarely solved through a single hire. Most organisations move through a series of stages, from identifying opportunity through to embedding capability at scale.

At Finatal, our role is to support that progression in a way that aligns with both the investment thesis and the reality of the business.

We help establish leadership ownership where needed, building senior accountability at either fund or portfolio level. Beneath that, we support the build-out of core AI teams, ensuring capability exists to deliver on identified priorities. Where speed is critical, we deploy interim & on-demand specialists who can deliver targeted use cases quickly and create early momentum.

Beyond hiring, the focus is on ensuring that AI initiatives move from concept to adoption, translating intent into execution. This is particularly important in private equity environments, where timelines are compressed and the expectation is visible impact within the hold period.

Roles we cover

We support hiring across the full spectrum of AI leadership and delivery roles, depending on where capability is required.

This includes senior positions such as Chief AI Officers, AI Operating Partners and AI-enabled CTOs or CPOs, who define direction and take ownership of delivery. We also place Heads of AI, Machine Learning and Data Science who build and lead core capability within the business.

At a more execution-focused level, we support AI product leaders, transformation directors and programme leads, as well as machine learning specialists, automation experts and emerging areas, such as prompt and agentic AI capability.

Across each mandate, the objective is consistent: ensuring AI capability translates into measurable business outcomes, rather than remaining isolated within technical teams.
