CFO Recruitment for Private Equity

CFO Recruitment for Private Equity

The CFO is no longer a control role. It’s the highest-leverage hire in the deal. In private equity-backed businesses, the CFO sits at the centre of value creation, shaping performance, informing decision-making, and ultimately determining how well a business stands up at exit.

Finatal partners with private equity funds and their portfolio companies to appoint CFOs who can operate at that level, combining technical excellence with the judgement, pace and commercial instinct required in a PE environment.

This isn’t a traditional finance search. The mandate is to find a CFO who can partner the CEO, stand up to investor scrutiny and drive outcomes across the investment lifecycle.

Where great CFOs create value

The impact of a strong CFO is visible across the hold period:

  • At entry
Supporting diligence, validating financials and shaping the investment case.
  • During the hold
Improving reporting, strengthening controls, managing cash and debt and supporting growth initiatives.
  • At moments of pressure
Providing clarity when performance deviates – with the ability to act, not just report.
  • Towards exit
Ensuring the business is prepared for scrutiny, with credible numbers, strong narratives, and no surprises.

In many cases, the CFO is the most consequential hire outside the CEO.

What differentiates a PE-backed CFO

Not all CFOs translate effectively into a private equity environment. The difference is not just experience, but how that experience is applied under pressure.

The CFOs we place stand out because they combine technical strength with commercial judgement and a clear understanding of how value is created and realised in a PE-backed business. Many will have operated through multiple hold cycles, giving them first-hand experience of what drives performance at each stage, from acquisition through to exit.

They’re able to translate financial information into decision-making insight, influencing strategy rather than simply reporting on it. Their comfort with leverage, refinancing and complex capital structures allows them to operate effectively in environments where financial decisions are closely linked to investor outcomes. At the same time, they bring credibility with boards, investors, and lenders, building confidence in both the numbers and the narrative.

Perhaps most importantly, they demonstrate a bias for action. They’re prepared to take ownership, step into operational detail when needed and move quickly to address issues or opportunities. Combined with a clear understanding of what ‘good’ looks like at exit, this allows them to maintain focus on outcomes, not just process.

This is what enables them to operate effectively in high-expectation, high-accountability environments.

Our approach to CFO search

CFO hiring in private equity is rarely a process exercise: it’s a risk decision, often with material implications for performance and exit outcomes.

At Finatal, our role is to reduce that risk by focusing on the areas that matter most. We operate exclusively within private capital CFO talent pools, ensuring that every candidate we consider has relevant exposure to PE-backed or similar high-performance environments. Rather than assessing against generic role specifications, we evaluate candidates in the context of the specific deal, business and challenges they’ll face.

We prioritise track record and repeatability of outcomes, focusing on individuals who have delivered in comparable situations, rather than relying on title or tenure alone. Searches are run as focused, high-conviction processes, targeting a select group of candidates rather than broad market trawls.

We typically support both retained CFO searches for critical, long-term appointments and interim CFO placements where timing is compressed or the situation is time-sensitive.

CFO roles we cover

We support private equity funds and their portfolio companies across a range of CFO hiring scenarios, from first-time appointments through to upgrades and replacement hires during the hold period.

This includes portfolio company CFOs, where the role is most directly linked to value creation, as well as fund-level CFO and finance leadership positions. We also support growth, turnaround and carve-out situations, where the demands on the CFO are often more complex, and pre-exit appointments where the focus is on preparing the business for sale.

Across each mandate, whether interim or permanent, the emphasis is on delivering a finance leader who can improve performance, strengthen investor confidence and contribute directly to exit readiness.
